Headphone starts at low volume

Problem

When plugging in a headphone and selecting it in Gnome Control Center for audio output, sound is very faint. If you go into alsamixer you will see that the headphone output is at a low value (below 10). When increasing that mixer setting you can hear out of the headphones.

Expected Behavior

Plugging in the headphone should ideally switch to that audio output/input for applications but until that works, at the very least selecting headset output in Gnome Control Center should cause audible audio to come out of the headphones.

Steps to Reproduce

  • Plug in headphones (I've noticed I can't plug headphones all the way into the jack if I want good audio)
  • Select Headset as audio output in Gnome Control Center
  • Play audio and notice it is very faint if audible at all
  • Install alsamixer, run it in a terminal, press F6 to select the appropriate device, and increase the audio for the first mixer (headphones) until you can hear audio from the headphones
