Starting SMS conversation from Contacts doesn't work

On my Birch device using the staging repos I currently get this flow when trying to send an SMS to a number from Contacts:

  1. Open a contact with a phone number in Contacts
  2. click the "message" button next to the phone number
  3. Chatty opens, showing the main conversation list view (instead of starting a new conversation)
To upload designs, you'll need to enable LFS and have an admin enable hashed storage. More information
