Multiple sms threads when number is formatted differently

I create a new SMS chat thread using a contact who's phone number was formatted as (111)222-3333. However, when I received a response from the same number the ModemManager formatted the incoming number as 1112223333. The incoming message was placed in a new thread, presumably because the number is formatted differently . The result is I now have two threads with the same contact.

What is interesting is both threads are tied to the same contact in the address book. That is, both the (111)222-3333 and the 1112223333 numbers are getting linked to the contact in the address book correctly, but it is still creating a separate thread for the 1112223333 number instead of placing those incoming texts in the already created (111)222-3333 number.
