Domain-based social marketing considered less harmful
User story: I run my business from a domain I control. I want to promote my services without violating privacy, so that I can improve sales and retain my customers' trust.
Technical notes: The primary measures of success are:
- Promotion success. Which external links generate unique visitors to my domain.
- Conversion success. Which internal pages generate successful sales.
Suggested solution: A single ActivityPub account @hello@example.com
, hosted on the same domain as the website. Thus all reasonable meaningful measurements can be made with standard web headers and short-term functional cookies. No reliance on user tracking or third-party analytics.
Anyone in the ActivityPub fediverse can opt IN to public interactions with the "hello" account, including sharing posts with others.
