Big camera refuses to work
This happens about half of the time. Driver loaded on boot.
megapixels gives no image, dmesg shows the following:

Somehow the device doesn't get up on the i2c bus. i2ctransfer returns an error when this happens. Log immediately before:

The driver also never goes into the OFF state once that happens.

This is identical to when the camera switch is off, and I can't reproduce it since 10 reboots now. Maybe should be closed in favor of https://source.puri.sm/Librem5/linux-next/-/issues/298

no. the issue is after cameras probed successfully, the big cam doesn't start streaming via megapixels. here are logs when switching from the selfie preview (streaming sucessfully) to the big cam:

Obviously, something stands in the way of the device returning on the SPI bus. Flipping the power switch does not affect the error message, which just repeats when trying to use the device.

Testing with the bug about regulator failure propagation fixed in https://source.puri.sm/dorota.czaplejewicz/linux-next/-/commit/39eba87d227aef0d4a2e650e7270d418b027d3aa , the issue persists, so it seems regulator doesn't fail.
It's still possible that the wrong set of regulators is in use.

you switch only 1 regulator in the driver (in the end it need to be 3), but that's ok because specifically on our board all 3 are the same. and according to our dtsi description,
state->supply = devm_regulator_get(&c->dev, "vddio");
is correct (it should propagate a possible error though). also, as soon as any i2c read/write works, power is ok. so the correct regulator is in use. - Author Maintainer

yea that just means that devm_regulator_get() succeeds as expected. other mismatch is happening. try adding
pm_runtime_idle(&c->dev);
afterpm_runtime_enable(&c->dev);
in probe().

Low confidence, but I've seen some people on the forum saying that it doesn't work "any longer". If that's actually true, I suspect some power management changes being behind it. Otherwise there's no reason the i2c bus would be dead.

I have a testing procedure that makes it work for me:
- use pureos/byzantium kernel
- boot with switch off
- flip the switch on
- immediately fire up Megapixels
This seems to keep the i2c bus in a working state. I think it's getting permanently turned off for some invalid reason.
EDIT: also it doesn't go back to the broken state again? Weird.

When I load the driver somewhere in the boot process (udev reacting to the switch), that leaves the i2c bus in a broken state, with no devices replying:

When I load the driver after the device is booted, the i2c bus keeps working. Reads to 0x2d fail when the camera is not in use, but 0x36 continue (max17055 fuel gauge). Weirdly enough, I can see a battery status in phosh in both cases.

The camera regulator seems wonky. Boot without big camera module leaves it enabled:

The number will go up to 3 when the switch is on, the module loaded, and Megapixels running.
Boot with camera module loaded early leves it disabled, with 0 users. Turning on Megapixels bumps it up to 1. But it also stays at 1.
EDIT: Turning on without camera can also result in 1 mysterious user.

This doesn't seem right. This is booted with the switch in the off position and hi846 and dw9714 blacklisted, so none of the camera modules are on.
I do get an attempt to load s5k3l6xx (not sure why, maybe udev), with the same regulator-related stack trace as here https://source.puri.sm/Librem5/linux-next/-/merge_requests/417
Could that be related? I'm going to investigate the failure case a bit closer.

Then there are the expected behaviors. If the camera is disabled megapixels will show a warning that the camera is disabled.
With librem5-base!252 (merged) added.
- If you boot with the camera disabled and enable the camera before opening megpixels it will recognize the camera.
- If you boot with the camera disabled and open megapixels you have the error message, and it does not change state if the camera is enabled. But if you close megapixels after enabling the camera and reopen, then it recognizes the big camera
